Recent Discussion of Sit And Go Strategy

December 29, 2008

Hey everyone,

I thought I’d start this blog with my take on the heated debate we’ve been having over the best sit and go poker strategy.  This has been going around the poker forum for quite some time and I’d like to just have my say and clear the air.

Tried and True

Until this debate started I didn’t realize how many different strategies people were really using for SNG games.  I knew people had slightly different evaluations of which cards were strong at each point in the game, but some of the radical ideas thrown at there both surprised and intrigued me.  As far as I am concerned though, SNG games reflect the final table of a tournament.  Just like the final table, SNG games have increasing blnds and a play-till-you-lose setup.  In my eyes this means you need to stick around till at least the bubble, and as the pots get progressively larger, you need to make a few moves (maybe even stealing the blnds) to get ahead.

So what does this setup mean for strategy?  Well in my eyes you need to start conservative.  I’m not talking about taking this to an extreme (not playing any hands) but you should be folding all but the strongest hands to concerve your chip stack and build a reputation at the table as a tight player.  As things get a little more heated down the road you can cash in on this reputation by stealing blinds and bluffing on the big pots.  I think the proper pattern of play has always been to start tight and get more and more agressive as time goes on, and I can’t see any other strategy doing a better job of getting you win.
